Sexy new iPod update

iPod updater iconOkay... well maybe it cannot be described as sexy... but don't you just love knowing that your hardware is spiffingly up to date. No? Well I do.

So what does software version 1.2 offer the world? Nothing it seems. Nothing unless you get one of these crazy Nike gadgets which count your steps (and what not) on your iPod. Well I guess it does add that little trademark remark at the end of 'Settings > Legal' and fixes a few mysterious bugs.

Linux for human beings. Are you kiding me?

Linux logoI admit it. I am curious about Linux. I am a curious person. Hell, you'd need to be curious to move from Windows to Mac. Just a few days ago I received my free copy of Ubuntu and I had to give it a whirl it to satisfy this curiosity.

Ubuntu's tag line is "Linux for human beings"... pah... sure it is. It's meant to be the easiest Linux distro for new users and is available for PPC based machines, and therefore seems to be perfect, at least to get me started. I booted the live CD which allows you to run the OS right off the disc rather than off the disk (albeit at a very slow pace). I had a little poke around... it's very basic... but everything a basic user might need seems to be present.

However I'm stumped for actually getting it installed. I guess it's not really Ubuntu's fault... the main problem seems to be getting it and OS X to coexist.

I managed to use Linux's Parted program (via the terminal) to create a couple of extra partitions required by Ubuntu (without killing the tiger)... but the installer didn't complete because it couldn't find an 'Apple boot loader partition' (or something like that). I shall ask on the forums and see what it yields.

I've been wanting to give Linux a little try for years... but the whole scary partition/format/bootdisk thing kept me away. Oh well... at least OS X is still serving me well... even with 10GB shaved off his hard disk.

Me, My Mac and I

So where to begin? It's 8:19 in the morning, British Summer Time, and sitting up in bed I've jus' had this sudden urge to start a blog, with a Mac theme; as if there isn't enough of these already, I hear you kid.

So do allow me to introduce myself...

My name is Jon, yes that's right folks - without that crazy 'h', and I am an eighteen year old boy who lives on that wee island called Ireland. I am a Mac user of almost one year, i.e., I'm a noobie.

As the polite boy I am, I should of course introduce you to my Mac...

His name is sexBook and he is of iBook stock. He's a wee bit absent minded - only 512MB of memory. And his G4 brain's a little slow by these newfangled Mactel standards - 1⅓GHZ. He purrs like a tiger (the 10.4.7 breed) and can perform telepathy (in both AirPort and Bluetooth formats).

I was rather surprised by my inspiration for a blog title. Yes... I think 'Me, My Mac and I' is a rather good title. I'm sure somebody out there is already using it, and for that reason I didn't google to find out. Naughty naughty eh?

"And what can I expect from this blog?" I hear you frustratingly question. Well... I really don't know. I shall be documenting the relationship of my Mac and myself. Giving my take on Appleness. Regurgitating news from TUAW. Avoiding rumours. And generally jus' trying to entertain my new found readership of at least three people - me, my mum and that that girl googling for someone called Jon MacAndi.

So yes... welcome to Me, My Mac and I.
